Introduction to Child Sexual Abuse training: Within the context of Primary Care

Overview

Child sexual abuse is alarmingly common in Australia. One in three girls and almost one in five boys experience sexual abuse before the age of 18.

Primary health care workers, practitioners, and allied health providers are central to contributing to improved short- and long-term health outcomes in communities across Australia for people with lived and living experience of child sexual abuse and/or adult sexual violence.

From this session you will be able to:

  • Recognise and respond to disclosed or suspected child sexual abuse in a trauma informed way.
  • Identify the signs of child sexual abuse within children and adult survivors
  • Describe why people find it difficult to disclose child sexual abuse
  • Understand the local referral pathway to link current victim-survivors and historical survivors of child sexual abuse for specialised supports.

The Care and Connect – Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Program is funded by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing and aims to improve the primary healthcare system’s response to Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence (DFSV), including Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) through the delivery of training and direct support from the Care and Connect Linkers.
