Introduction to Sexual Violence: Within the context of Primary Care

Overview

Sexual violence occurs frequently in Australia. Statistics show 22% of women and 6.1% of men have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15 and can have devastating, cumulative and long-lasting impacts on their lives.

General Practitioners have a critical role to identify, report and respond to sexual violence, as many victims and survivors have extensive contact with general practice throughout their lives.

From this session you will be able to:

  • Recognise and respond to disclosed or suspected sexual violence in a trauma-informed way.
  • Identify the signs of sexual violence in a primary care setting
  • Describe why people find it difficult to disclose sexual violence
  • Understand the local referral pathway to link current victim-survivors of sexual violence for specialised supports.

The Care and Connect – Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Program is funded by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing and aims to improve the primary healthcare system’s response to Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence (DFSV), including Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) through the delivery of training and direct support from the Care and Connect Linkers.

Please note: this training explores sensitive topics which may bring up strong feelings. Please know you are welcome to step away at any time and support options will be shared during the session
