Care and Connect: Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Program - Sexual Violence

Overview

Domestic, family and sexual violence can have significant and long-lasting impacts on health and wellbeing. Patients affected by abuse often present with a range of physical, psychological and behavioural health concerns, making primary care one of the most important settings for early identification and support. This free training is designed for primary care and will build confidence in recognising indicators of harm, responding safely and compassionately, and connecting patients with appropriate support services. Through evidence-informed content and practical guidance, participants will strengthen their ability to provide trauma-informed care and contribute to a safer, more supportive healthcare experience for patients impacted by abuse.

Special Guest Presentation

Dr Glenys Griffiths, Medical Lead, Medical Forensic Unit, Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, will provide an overview of the Medical Forensic Unit and the services available to patients.

Introduction to Sexual Violence

Sexual violence is a significant health issue that can affect people of all ages, backgrounds and life stages. Patients may not disclose their experiences directly, yet the impacts can present in many ways within primary care. This session focuses on recognising and responding to sexual violence in the primary care setting. Participants will gain practical knowledge and skills to:
  • Recognise indicators of sexual violence that may present in clinical practice.
  • Understand the physical, psychological and social impacts of sexual violence.
  • Use trauma-informed communication to support safe and sensitive conversations.
  • Respond appropriately to disclosures while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Understand safety considerations, consent and referral options.
  • Navigate local pathways to specialist support services.
You will also meet a Care and Connect Linker and learn how they can support you and your practice with advice, information and connections to relevant services.
