Introduction to Domestic and Family Violence: Within the context of primary care

Overview

Domestic and family violence is a significant public health and societal issue that can have a lifelong impact on those experiencing it. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, an estimated 2.2 million people had experienced abuse from a partner with one in 6 women and one in 16 men. We know that GPs can be the first point of contact for individuals experiencing abuse so its important they are equipped with the skill to recognise and respond appropriately.

From this session you will be able to:

  • Access information about the Care and Connect program
  • Recognise the signs of domestic and family violence
  • Identify barriers to disclosing domestic and family violence
  • Respond to those affected by domestic and family violence
  • Meet and learn about how a DFV Linker can support you and your patient with advice and information relating to DFV, including appropriate referral pathways available in your region.

The Care and Connect – Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Program is funded by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing and aims to improve the primary healthcare system’s response to Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence (DFSV), including Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) through the delivery of training and direct support from the Care and Connect Linkers.
