Strengthening Medication Safety with Digital Health Tools

Overview

This session explores how digital health tools can strengthen medication safety in general practice. Attendees will gain an overview of electronic prescribing and SafeScript NSW, and how these systems support safer, more informed prescribing and dispensing.

The session will also highlight how the 1800MEDICARE app can empower patients to actively engage in their healthcare by managing electronic prescription tokens and viewing key health information.

Learning outcomes:

  • Explain what electronic prescriptions are, including tokens and the Active Script List (ASL)
  • Describe the setup requirements for electronic prescribing in general practice, including patient preferences and workflow considerations
  • Explain how the 1800MEDICARE app allows patients to view electronic prescriptions, manage their ASL, check health information, and access Medicare-linked features
  • Describe the purpose and benefits of SafeScript NSW as a real-time prescription monitoring system
